GEOS
This is an operating system with windowing graphical user interafce and comes with a set of bundled apps:
geoWRITE - the wordprocessor
geoPAINT - the paint package
geoSPELL - the spelling checker
TextGrabber - a text files conversion utility
set of file and device drivers

C128
(Please note that the C128 can be used in the C64 mode and therefore is compatible with most of the C64 apps.)

CP/M

The Commodore 128 came either with a built-in disk drive (128D) or with an external 5,25" drive (C1571) and CP/M was available, even bundled with some models and often used. Most standard CP/M applications can therefore be used.

 connector

What you need in order to be able to use the computer and what peripherals connect to it.

Unexpanded C64:
A TV set or better yet a composite video monitor for display (Commodore 1801, 1084...). An original or compatible casette recorder is compulsory for loading and storing software an ordinary one cannot be used, so if your second hand C64 didn't come with one you're srewed. The C1541 floppy disk drive or compatible (5,25") or C1581 (3,5") is however much better solution.

Third party
add-ons:

Many Commodore as well as third party add-ons were available for the C64/128 including 5,25" and 3,5" disk drives, serial printers and plotters (like the Commodore 1520 4-colour printer/plotter which uses the same engine as the Sharp MZ-1P16).
Many add-ons used the cartridge port and most of the devices still available use this. If you would like a serial/parallel port for connecting to a PC, or even a hard drive or ATAPI CD-ROM connected to your computer, check out the IDE64 project  page.

The C-1 Reconfigurable Computer

Similar to the Spectrum scene, the commodorists couldn't quite bear the idea of their platform not evolving anymore and the fitest ones deisgned a new "super commodore", the c1 (formerly known as the Commodore 1). Just like the Sprinter the c1 is a so-called multiform, reconfigurable computer, the design being based on an FPGA chip. It is however a bit more advanced in some respects it comes in the ATX form factor mainboard (supporting the ATX power management features), with PCI slots rather than the 8-bit ISA. Since it's still realtively new, it still lacks software support comparable to the one of Sprinter many of the integrated devices like IDE still lack real software support or drivers, so it's up to each owner how he accesses them. This is however likely to be remedied by either independent programmers and/or the developpers of C64 operating systems like Kontiki, or maybe even hardware developers.

C PLUS/4

Year: 1984
Tech stuff: Processor 7501/ 0,9 or 1,8 MHz, RAM 64 KB, graphics 320 x 200 with 121 colours, 2channel sound, 4 built-in apps (text editor, spreadsheet, database, graph generator).

The Commodore scene is one of the few left, that are still more than just alive and kicking it is striving and developing new stuff all the time. This is no surprise considering C64 is the single computer model produced in the absolutely highest quantity and also the longest time in production reportedly some 20 million manufactured in the span of 11 years! The only noticable modification was the C64 II's more modern, sleek case.
The Commodore 64 had remarkable graphic and sound capabilities for its time, its sound chio (SID) unsurpased until the introduction of the Amiga. Like many other computers of the 80s it also had a cartridge slot, meant primarily for cartridge based games, but soon was exploited for other purposes to this day it serves many useful applications like memory expansion, IDE interface and recently even an Ethernet interface.
Although Commodore Business Machines produced many other personal computers and pioneered new technologies, no other model (perhaps with the exception of the Amiga) had even come close to c64's success. The C128 was possibly the last attempt to return the 8-bits closer the business application thanks to its higher resolution, more advanced hardware and even a second processor the Z80 which allows it to run CP/M yet it is still used mostly in the C64 mode due to the lack of native apps. Tha Amiga howver become anothe major feat in the history of computing, but since it still exists as a self-sufficient platform with an official corporate backing, it has been given a separate section in this web site.
